Glen Innes Severn Council acknowledges and thanks the 197 residents and businesses who organised and submitted a petition calling for the installation of street surveillance cameras to enhance public safety, deter criminal activity and promote a sense of security for all who live, work and visit the Glen Innes Severn community.

In response to the petition, Council has committed to several actions: acknowledging the petition, noting the current Council budget allocation for CCTV installations, pursuing external funding opportunities to expand the scope of surveillance and collaborating with property owners to encourage private surveillance measures.

Furthermore, Council will develop a Public Safety and Asset Protection CCTV Strategy incorporating Council installed cameras, mobile cameras, lighting and property owner installed cameras.

Mayor Margot Davis said, “Addressing youth crime requires a collaborative approach. By working closely with the business community and law enforcement, we can work towards minimising its impact on local businesses and safeguard the livelihoods of our residents.”

Local government has a role in contributing to public safety through the implementation of policies, good design of public spaces and advocating on behalf of the community.

While CCTV can be an effective tool in crime prevention and assisting the police in identifying offenders, Mayor Davis noted that it is only part of the solution. “CCTV can complement broader crime prevention strategies in rural communities, but it should not be relied upon as a sole solution. Engaging youth, fostering community ties, and proactive policing are equally critical to reducing crime,” she added.

NSW Police is a vital partner in this effort and contribute to the safety and well-being of our town and surrounding villages. We commend our local police force for their dedication and hard work in protecting and serving the community.
