GLEN INNES HEALTH HUB PROVIDER UNVEILED
Published on 18 December 2024
The Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network (HNECC PHN) is delighted to announce that Rural Fit, an allied health organisation dedicated to improving the health outcomes of rural communities, has been selected as the operator for the Glen Innes Health Hub, a "Better Health for the Bush" initiative.
The Health Hub will operate from the former Westpac Bank building at 293 Grey Street, Glen Innes and is expected to open early-mid 2025.
Earlier this year, HNECC PHN secured a grant through the Federal Government’s Innovative Models of Care (IMOC) Program, paving the way for the establishment of this vital Health Hub in Glen Innes. The IMOC Program aims to pilot new multidisciplinary primary care models that enhance patient access to primary health care.
The Glen Innes Health Hub will respond to community needs through a collaborative, multi-disciplinary, team-based approach. It will introduce new services and supplement existing ones, supported by digital solutions that help people to navigate the health system more effectively.
The initiative sits under the “Better Health for the Bush” Framework developed by the PHN, Hunter New England Local Health District and The University of New England. The Framework comprises models of care including the Comprehensive Approach to Rural Care Engagement (CARE) and Small Town Engagement Model (STEM) which aim to address the unique health needs of the region.
Andrew Mahony, Managing Director of Rural Fit, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “We are committed to improving lives in Glen Innes. We understand the challenges faced by General Practitioners and Allied Health Professionals in regional and rural areas. As the operator of a Glen Innes Health Hub, we will bring together a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care and support to the local community.”
HNECC PHN Chief Executive Officer Richard Nankervis emphasised the significance of the Health Hub for the Glen Innes community. “This initiative will deliver much-needed primary health care services, providing local and timely access to essential care. The Glen Innes Health Hub is a result of extensive collaboration among HNECC PHN, the Hunter New England Local Health District, University of New England, Glen Innes Council, health practitioners, and community members, all working together to identify and address local health needs.”
Earlier this year, members of the Glen Innes community attended forums and focus groups to provide valuable local perspectives to shape the healthcare services offered at the Health Hub, to ensure that these align with the unique needs of the Glen Innes community.
The IMOC pilot program is a four-year initiative funded through June 2027, which includes a Service Navigator to support patients, families and carers to navigate the complex health system, along with support for allied health and nursing student placements.
